What is domestic violence?

Domestic abuse can take many forms including:

  • Physical violence
  • Emotional or psychological abuse
  • Name calling/taunting
  • Harassment
  • Financial abuse
  • Intimidation
  • Threatening behaviour

How we can help

Our family department can advise on your legal rights regarding:

  • non-molestation orders
  • occupation orders
  • domestic abuse protection orders

Our legal experts can also help you to:

  • Seek divorce from an abusive partner
  • Resolve any financial issues
  • Finalise contact arrangements in the appropriate circumstances

Reporting domestic violence

The first step is to always report incidents of domestic violence to the police. If court proceedings are necessary, the involvement - or lack of involvement - of the police would usually be an initial consideration for the court.

The court can make orders to forbid violence and harassment (known as non-molestation orders). A breach of a non-molestation order is a criminal offence.

When a power of arrest is attached to an occupation order, a breach can result in arrest.
