Wills and Estate Planning

Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever make.  It is the only method of ensuring that your wishes are carried out on your death. We will tailor your Will to meet your individual requirements.  No two Wills are the same, just as no two people are the same.

A Will provides certainty and peace of mind.  It is the only way of leaving specific and cash gifts to your friends and family.  Without a Will complex rules (known as the intestacy rules) will govern how your estate is dealt with on your death. This could mean that your family and friends do not inherit your estate.  Did you know for example:

  • Your spouse may not inherit everything and may share your estate with more distant relatives?
  • There is no such thing, legally speaking, as a common law spouse, so co-habitees are not automatically entitled under the intestacy rules?
  • The intestacy rules do not include or extend to step-children?
  • Your friends cannot inherit your estate without being included in your Will, even if you have no other living relatives.....it could even pass to the government!

Inheritance Tax

Inheritance Tax can be a burden for many estates on death. It may be possible to reduce this burden with appropriate planning.

Inheritance Tax is a complex subject. We can discuss with you the potential tax charge and how it may be reduced, either in conjunction with making your Will or as separate specialist advice.  Helen is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and Karen is currently part way to achieving full qualified status.
