Dog Bite Claims

Dog bite injuries can be very nasty and whilst most dogs pose no problem at all, we have all read in the press about horrific dog attacks causing terrible injuries.

If you are bitten by a dog you will find yourself relying on the provisions of the Animals Act 1971. Under this act the keeper of the dog that bites you is liable if:

1. The dog was likely to bite you unless it was restrained ; and
2. The likelihood of the dog biting you was due to characteristics of the dog which are not normally found in dogs (at all or except at particular times or in particular circumstances); and
3. Those characteristics were known to the dog's keeper.

All three things must be proven.

Claiming compensation for a dog bite injury is not straightforward. Apart from establishing liability there are other factors to take into account (such as whether there is any insurance cover in place to pay).
