Safe Home Income Plans (SHIP)

What is SHIP?

When considering taking out an equity release plan, always ensure that it is supported by SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) All reputable Lending institutions should subscribe to the SHIP Code of Practice. SHIP is an organisation whose role is to ensure that equity release customers are given as much protection as possible.

A plan from a SHIP subscriber should be clear and concise and be presented in plain English and should include the following details:-

Benefits of the plan
Your obligations and commitments under the plan
Limitations of the plan
No repayments are required until your home is eventually sold when you die or move into long term care.
Detail your security of tenure in your property; SHIP plans allow for lifetime occupation by you and your partner
Costs involved
Your Tax position
Effect of moving to another property
Effect of market changes in property values; SHIP plans should provide full protection against negative equity
Affect on the value of your estate
