There are many potential reasons for divorce, but when it comes to divorce law, only the following are recognised:

Unreasonable behaviour: If unreasonable behaviour is cited as grounds for divorce, you must demonstrate that the relationship is irreconcilable as a direct result of said behaviour, and you can no longer live together. Unreasonable behaviour can consist of anything from poor financial management to domestic violence; courts tend to be lenient as to what constitutes unreasonable behaviour, judging each case individually.

Adultery: Adultery may only be cited as grounds for divorce if you can prove that your spouse had consensual sex with another person.

Desertion: If your spouse leaves the family home without your consent and stays away for a period of two years or more, desertion may be cited as grounds for divorce.

Separation for at least 2 years: In this case, the consent of the other party must be sought before the divorce can be finalised.

Separation for at least five years: In this case, consent of the other party is not required.
